RTL515 is a Garmin radar that connects the bicycle and smartphone with the aim of notifying vehicles approaching from behind. The design of this model is compact and elegant; its vertical position allows the best placement of the legs, allowing comfortable handling. Its rear radar offers multiple viewing options.
This Garmin electronic device includes bright lights that have visibility even in daylight. Its configuration has visual and audible alerts up to 140 meters away; you can also activate the platoon mode that generates a low intensity flash.
Among the advantages it offers is the ease of assembly. It is also compatible with other apps such as Varia that helps to overlay maps with radar alerts. The battery life is 16 hours in solid mode. The packaging includes the mounting kit, cables and documentation.

I am pleasantly surprised at how robust the radar function works. It really provides increased security, e.g. when driving against a low-lying sun, where drivers from behind have difficulty seeing me. This version (RTL515 - unlike the RTL516) also has a daylight function with very bright flashes, which gives good visibility, even in daylight - a function that I appreciate. What I miss, however, is an easy way to turn off the sound when I drive on a cycle path, as you get many irrelevant warnings from the cars out on the road.

The RTL515 is a good purchase in combination with a Garmin Edge and the Smartlights app. The different light modes are easy to select and provide added safety thanks to the very bright light. The radar function in conjunction with the light increases safety when driving on the road, without having to turn around or react too much, the Varia draws attention to itself and informs you about approaching vehicles via a display on the bike computer (Edge or Wahoo). There is even a difference in the approach speed on the Edge and the Varia app. The battery life could be a little longer, but is ok given the size of the device. The included bracket is usable, but there are better ones available from accessory stores. Still 5 stars for the device.

Extremely reassuring to drive knowing that you are well signposted, being warned of the arrival from behind of more or less fast vehicles, and knowing, after being overtaken, if another vehicle is approaching. Radar was the best price in this store. Incomparably better than here in the Czech Republic. Paired with Garmin 520 Plus without any problems. Haven't been able to try it yet as it's very cold here now for a road bike, but I believe it will be excellent for road safety. I don't have much confidence in a seatpost mount with an o-ring. Fortunately, you can order solid mounts from China. They are not even as expensive as the original, so if you have multiple bikes you can have a mount on each bike.

Works perfectly. I use it on the gravel bike and it recognizes cars coming from behind perfectly. So I know what's going on behind me without turning around. It doesn't save you from looking over your shoulder when turning, which is still necessary. Overall, driving is much more relaxed than without the device. In the woods there are sometimes beeps out of boredom, but these are immediately recognized by the frequency as not coming from cars. I use the device with a Bluetooth headset in my right ear and my cell phone in my pocket. I don't need the display, the acoustic signals are enough for me..

Next Best Thing To a Rear View Mirror.

I have always ridden with a rear view mirror, but really wanted a secondary method of alerting me to approaching traffic. I initially purchased an RTL510, which has been indispensable for approaching traffic which isn't obvious in a mirror. I since discovered that the 510 doesn't work with a smartphone, so I have purchased the RTL515, which works with Ride With GPS on a smartphone. Again, it does the job. I just wish Garmin had made it more obvious about the difference between 510 and 515.

A good safety product. You ride more relax knowing that the device will alert you when a car/truck is coming behind you before you can hear it coming. The ride is more focus on the ride rather than keeping looking behind to see if a car is coming or not. One other thing, when you turn your head to see if a car is coming (almost 180 degrees), often you also turn a bit the handles toward the middle of the road which is not secure but with the Varia RTL515 you don't need to do that anymore!

hello, 1) the Varia RTL 515 taillight contains mounting bracket that attaches to the seat post using rubber bands. there is, to buy separately, a collar bracket for round seat posts. 2) the UT800 front light uses GO-Pro attachment. the trail edition version has the helmet holder included. the Urban version has no support because it uses the Garmin cycle computer support.

Hi, I´m not sure I understood your question correctly, but the Garmin Varia rtl515 comes with a seat post mount. The set includes probably 3 rubber bands for different shapes of the seatposts. I hope I helped. Arthur
