This tire has Etrto 38. If the internal distance between the lips of your rim is 20 mm you can mount tires from 32 to 62. The big-wheeled mountain bikes known as 29ers also use this size, so there are off-road tyres up to a whopping 75mm wide. Means 20 mm is bigger than 18 mm

You have to look for a number on your tire, it will say ETRTO 622 accompanied by a two-number figure, that figure must be between 15 and 25 for this tire to be worth it. Search the internet for an ETRTO table and you´ll see it.

So the 42c you put is not from the rim, it´s from the tire. This measurement is called ETRTO, the rim and the tire each have their ETRTO measurement and are different. If it has worked for you, it is because your rim and not the tire, has an ETRTO value between 17c and 23c, it should be on the rim.
