The SM-SH56 cleats differ from the SM-SH51, in that the latter are only released from the pedal by pulling to the side. The SH56, on the other hand, allows more movements to release the foot from the pedal, this is useful in emergency situations or for cyclists with little dexterity. Multi-release cleats are much easier to release than the standard Shimano cleats that come with Shimano pedals. They release easily in the standard way, and also a hard pull in any direction other than proper pedaling motion will release the cleats. My 10 year old was a bit nervous, but the first time she tried them, she liked them better than mountain bike toe clips. Bike Inn shipped the correct product, unlike another online shop it's tried before.
